An Incomparable Artist's Golden Brush Shocking the World - Chinese Paintings by H. H. Dorje Change Buddha III

There have been numerous talented artists throughout the history of Chinese painting. They have produced countless magnificent paintings that have contributed to the excellent Chinese culture. But most of the great artists throughout the ages have tended to specialize in one particular skill, style, or subject matter. Those who excelled at landscape painting were rarely proficient in flower and bird painting. Those who were proficient in flower and bird painting were rarely adept at figure painting; and so on and so forth. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III , however, is proficient in all subject matters—whether landscape, flowers and birds, animals, fish, insects, or figures. With respect to artistic techniques, he has excelled at meticulous painting, freehand brushwork, splash-ink style, and many others. In all of these areas, His Holiness has demonstrated real traditional skills and originality.

In his art, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III has indeed assimilated the essence of traditional Chinese painting. Not only has His Holiness learned from the painting traditions of Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasty scholars, His Holiness has also easily mastered the grand and vigorous style of pre-Song Dynasty painting. Yet, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III has not merely emulated the techniques of any one painter or any one school. His Holiness has learned from ancient artistry and has also learned from nature. Combining the two, His Holiness has created a novel and unique style of his own. From a careful examination of paintings by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III , it is not difficult to see the legacy of tradition and the spirit of originality.

"Carp in a Lotus Pond" :

Carp in a Lotus Pond by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

"Carp in a Lotus Pond" is one of the most superb paintings of fish created by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III . Between September and November of 1998, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III successfully created this ink-and-wash style "Carp in a Lotus Pond" painting in which He finally depicted the hazy, animated scene of swimming carp in a way that is real, natural-looking, and vivid. The interplay of depth and shallowness, the variations of reality and illusion, the clear distinction between fish swimming in deep water and fish swimming in shallow water, the naturalness of the entire scene, and the atmosphere of charming liveliness make this elegant painting a marvelous achievement. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III  has reached a state of unsurpassed excellence in realistic, detailed, ink-wash painting of fish and freehand painting of lotus leaves and water plants.

The lotus flowers and water plants in the accompanying scenery are enchanting and life-like. They were indeed captured with incredible realism. This work can de described as vibrant and natural, with seemingly unending variation in both form and spirit. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III bodily applied vertical brushstrokes to create the effect of melding the real with the illusion. The vigor and naturalness in the application of brush and ink are utterly incomparable, giving this painting a dynamic appeal filed with boundless creation.

"Na Mo Guan Shi Yin Pu Sa (Prostrate to Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva)":

Na Mo Guan Shi Yin Pu Sa (Prostrate to Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva) by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

Guan Yin Bodhisattva is a Bodhisattva at the level of marvelous enlightment, which means possessing the marvelous enlightment of a Buddha. That is, the Bodhisattva is one of great holiness and virtue who is no different from a Buddha. AS recorded in sutras, Guan Yin Bodhisattva is the incarnation of an ancient Buddha call True Dharma Brightness Tathagata and is the king of great compassion. The Bodhisattva is incessantly busy day and night helping all humans and other living beings in the Three Spheres and had accumulated boundlessly vase merit. This painting was created in the year 1980. In creating this work, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III adopted the style of the ancient murals inside the Dunhuang Grottos in China in charm, spirit, overall appearance, and lines. This painting belongs to the "Yousi" style.

Majesty”:

Majesty by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

These characteristics of His Holiness’s paintings have long ago been confirmed by art experts and collectors. In 2000, paintings by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III entitled “Majesty” and “Venerable Da Li Won” sold at an international auction for US$2,125,327 and US$2,207,912, respectively. At that time, those sales set new records for the highest priced painting of any living oriental artist in the world as well as the highest priced Chinese paintings ever sold at an auction. Various media reported on those two sales and praised H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III as a consummate artist who is unprecedented in the history of Chinese painting.

Various technique were used in this painting entitles "Majesty" in order to enable viewers to see clearly the fur of this gallant lion and his cubs. Brush touches of various degrees of thickness and thinness were applied. Stone-based coloring material used in Chinese paintings was also applied. Every stroke of the brush became a separate hair. The process required much labor. Such a painting takes one to two years to complete. In short, a long time and painstaking effort are needed.

The mighty loin in this painting is in a lying pose with a majestic, awe-inspiring appearance that shakes the skies and land. Large-scale freehand brushwork was used to paint the rock and trees in the surrounding scene. The versatile skills of the artist are fully evidenced. The brushwork was completed in a mature, vigorous, bold, and spontaneous way. Naturally imbued in this surrounding scene are the profound literary and other talents of the artist. Painting mastery was reached in depicting this very appealing surrounding scene in which what appears chaotic is not in disorder and what appears somewhat real is abstract. Experts in calligraphy can see that each brush stroke used to paint the huge rock on which the lion lies was applied with a free and unfettered hand. Calligraphic skills were used with the effect of painting. Painting skills were used to bring out the spirit of the work. Brush techniques were applied to express char, and power. Calligraphy and painting unite in this one work of art. The artistic treasure contains energetic strokes and embodies a grand artistic conception. Its style belongs to the "Kuangxi" style of painting.

Two Flowers; One Lotus Capsule; One Dharma Nature”:

Two Lotus Flowers, One Lotus Capsule, One Dharma Nature by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

In 2007, a painting by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III of lotus flowers entitled “Two Flowers; One Lotus Capsule; One Dharma Nature” sold for U.S.$300,000 per square foot. That painting contains His Holiness’s signature in the form of the two Chinese characters “Wan Ko”, His Holiness’s fingerprint, and His Holiness’s calligraphy and paintings seal.

"Two Lotus Flowers, One Lotus Capsule, One Dharma Nature" was created after H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III came to the United States. The technique of freehand brushwork in simple strokes was used, as was the technique supplementing the scene with fascinating charm. Various elegant brushwork styles were blended into one whole to create an image of harmonious beauty. The inherent essence of the lotus flowers was brought forth with a very small number of brush strokes. Only a few strokes were used to paint each flower, yet they look so real, beautiful, alive, elegant, and enchanting. These vibrant flowers reflect the artist's experienced hand that created them. They even convey a three-dimensional, fresh feeling. Although this work of art appears very simple, it in fact is far from ordinary. From the stems of the lotus flowers, one can immediately discern the flavor of stone seal engravings. Therefore, no additional touches are needed on the stems. The key fact id that, with just one stroke of the brush for each stem, quality of the highest order is naturally expressed. This is a state of artistry that is extremely difficult to achieve, In addition to such interesting brushwork are the design and colors of the flowers vase. Charming clusters produce the effect of a natural marble pattern. It looks completely real without any trace of artificiality.

The meaning of the title "Two Lotus Flowers, One Lotus Capsule, One Dharma Nature" is that these two lotus flowers and one lotus capsule give expression to the original nature of everything in the universe. That is, the source of the highest state of artistry is the wisdom that springs forth from one's original nature. Such art belongs to the Craftsmanship Vidya, which is one of the Five Vidya.

"Gang Gu Sheng Feng (An Air of Unyielding Strength)":

Gang Gu Sheng Feng (An Air of Unyielding Strength) by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

A plum blossom painting by His Holiness sold for U.S.$210,000 per square foot. That painting contains His Holiness’s signature in the form of the two Chinese characters “Wan Ko” and His Holiness’s fingerprint.

The title of this painting, "Gang Gu Sheng Feng (An Air of Unyielding Strength)" indicates its style, emotional appeal, and skillfulness. Every brush stroke shows the skill of the artist. The bold and forceful style of stone inscriptions can be seen in the crisscrossing of twigs, branches, and tree trucks. Although red plum blossoms created through light touches of the brush are numerous, they are not randomly arranged, for there is order within apparent randomness. This painting originates from real life yet transcends real life. Its plum blossoms surpass real plum blossoms in beauty and in conveying the uplifting notion of bravely withstanding the snowy winter.

“Pasture in Spring (A Sheppard Boy Herding Cattle)”:

Pasture in Spring (A Sheppard Boy Herding Cattle) by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

There is another painting by His Holiness entitled “Pasture in Spring (A Sheppard Boy Herding Cattle).” On that painting His Holiness inscribed in Chinese characters “Dorje Chang Buddha III Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu.” That painting also contains His Holiness’s fingerprint and dharma king seal. It truly is a rare and precious work of art. Although an offer was made to purchase that painting for U.S.$540,000 per square foot, that offer was lower than the selling price set by the International Buddhism Sangha Association of U.S.$900,000 per square foot. Thus, the sale was not consummated.

His Holiness used the scattered perspective technique to give a three-dimensional appearance. Emptiness was used to depict form. Form and emptiness blend into one. The layout of this painting is highly elegant. It is a work of art that conveys natural charm and reflects an innocent childlike mind, thereby providing people with comfort and enjoyment. What is particularly marvelous is the application of ink on a minute level to depict the hairs of the oxen in countless variations. This boundless fascinating and enchanting creation is in the artistic style of "Fangfa." What was published in earlier years was printed from a duplicate of this painting. The inscription on the duplicates is "Year of the Buffalo. spring of the year Yichou, Zhi Wan Yee." It was not until 2010 when the genuine original painting became known to the world, inscribed with the words "Year of the Buffalo, Dorje Chang III."

"Su Shi Nao Chun - Twittering Sparrows in Early Spring":

Su Shi Nao Chun - Twittering Sparrows in Early Spring by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

Wielding the brush freely and effortlessly, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III  used only a small number of brush strokes to depict this relaxed and delightful motif. Spring is in the air, the sun shines gently, the breezes are pleasant, and branches are sprouting leaves. A group of sparrows perched on branches are enjoying themselves to their heart's content. As a poem states, "On a sunny day with light wind, nobody has any cares. this enrapturing scene of nature is for all to enjoy, yet only birds are having fun playing about." These birds look calm and at ease as they chirp softly and call out loudly. They seem to be heartily singing a light melody. All of this makes for a lovely and peaceful scene that is full of life, leisurely, highly elegant, and deeply absorbing. This artwork is in the "Fanpu" style.

"Qiu Se Yan Yun (Mist, Clouds, and Autumnal Color)":

Qiu Se Yan Yun (Mist, Clouds, and Autumnal Color) by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

"Mist, Clouds, and Autumnal Color" is a splash-color painting that conveys a very strong sense of flowing watery ink and colors. An air of power and grandeur expressed through clouds that seem to swallow mountains and waters pervades the entire painting. The natural, captivating charm of this scene is similar to the charm of a scene on the ground after a long, flowing river has just rolled by. This setting is embellished with red maple leaves and houses amid autumnal, cloudy mountains, presenting a wonderful image distinctly characteristic of fall. When carefully examining the watery ink that produced such charm, one can see beautiful areas that are themselves paintings within a painting and details that are hidden within rough brushwork. Even within small areas are subtle variations of darkness and light, of the surreal and the real, all the while embodying splendid charm.

"Old Temple in Spring in Which No One Is Seen":

Old Temple in Spring in which No One is Seen by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

Red walls and black roof tiles appear indistinctly partially hidden by the forest. It seems that no one comes to visit this old temple made up of several buildings. What kind of place is this? This is a holy place with celestial grass of jade-like beauty and a heavenly ancient monastery.

When inscribing this painting, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III named it, "An old temple in spring in which no one is seen. A monk here attained the enlightment mind of Zen long ago." The meaning of this is extremely profound and broad. Its message is that this is the residence of a superior person, a monk who is a master. That master long ago attained enlightment and entered the meditative state of emptiness and joy. That is why ordinary people are unable to see his physical body. Deeply embedded within this painting is a simple yet riveting artistic force. This artwork combined the style of stone seal engravings and a scholarly air. It has the charm of a painting by the Western master of art, Van Gogh, but it also embodies learning and talent characteristic of Eastern culture. It is an idyllic scene of subtle beauty.

"Lan Se Bing Tian (Landscape of Icy Blue)":

Lan Se Bing Tian (Landscape of Icy Blue) by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

From the blue charm of an ink-and-wash painting, it is not difficult to see the level of an artist's accomplishment and talent. This painting called "Landscape if Icy Blue" may seem simple. However, after one attempts to copy it, one will know how deep it truly is. The mountains and trees were painted in the same watery ink color as the sky. Wondrous charm flows within the surreal depictions. The attractive theme and colors fuse naturally into an integral whole. Each touch of the brush was applied without the slightest mental attachment. The artist, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, captured the spirit of the painting, which is manifested in the image. One can see the distinct differences between dense ink and light coloring., all accomplished without any sign of artificiality. The interplay of the real and the surreal together with unexpected variations produce a charming effect throughout the entire painting. This artwork provides the viewer with aesthetic enjoyment due to its free, other-worldly, dreamy tone.

"Xing Yuan Ri Li Shan (Xing Garden at Mount Rili)":

Xing Yuan Ri Li Shan (Xing Garden at Mount Rili) by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

Painting by The artist, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III , at Xing Garden in 1993, "Xing Garden at Mount Rili" portrays the natural world of steep cliffs. Vibrant green depicts moss and grass widely spread over rocks. This painting was later captured as a photograph and inscribed with the title "Xing Garden at Mount Rili." The original painting, however, was never inscribed. More than ten years later, the piece was refined and refinished, and interestingly, it was simply inscribed as "Mount Rili."

This painting adopts the techniques of the "Miaoxie" style of painting. When examining the brushwork carefully, you will discover interweaving brush strokes that resemble the crisscrossing of thin wires, creating change and variation as well as revealing a multitude of emotion and intrigue through their complexity. The excellence in technique is reflected in the spirit of the work, including the limitless appeal of the illusory watery ink.

When observed from near or far, the painting appears to depict the natural scene of a bottomless waterfall painted in fine, meticulous brushwork. If you carefully examine the subtle details of the brushwork of the painting, however, you will be startled by the vigorous brush touches. There is substance within emptiness and order amid seeming chaos. An artistic beauty born of free, natural brush stokes infuse this painting. Through the strength and power of vigorous brush strokes, the artist unveils the extraordinary aesthetic charm lying within the simple scene of a waterfall between two cliffs.

"Gu Tu (Native Land)":

Gu Tu (Native Land) by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

"Native Land" belongs to the "Chouxiang Yunwei" style of painting of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. Inner-restraint of the artist marks the brushwork of "Native Land." This painting has a noble, classic, and powerful look to it. One can easily see that the rock in the picture is the place where giant mythical birds and mighty eagles that dwelled there over a long period of time. The rock looks like a cultural relic and is in different shades of color, from light to dark. It obviously appears to have existed over a very extended period. There is much residual matter on its surface. It is easy to see that this is the residence of the king of birds, a place with an imposing air of might that definitely keeps all other beasts, birds, and fowl from daring to invade.

The arrangement of this painting and the techniques used evidence artistic experience and unadorned simplicity. Charming appeal and the painter's artistic conception can be found within simple ordinariness. This work of art expresses a grand vision and is devoid of any sign of rashness on the part of the artist. It also conveys the profound thought that one will not be attacked by evil forces only if one possesses outstanding, imposing, and extensive virtue.

This is the original, authentic painting. Another one that appeared in some books is a duplicate of this painting. At the time the authentic painting was created, H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III  thought that inscribing His calligraphy on it would not be appropriate. Therefore, He kept this excellent work and did not wield His brush to inscribe it until 2010. The painting is inscribed in Chinese with its name, "Native Land," and the name of the artist, "H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III." It is stamped with the three-dimensional, eight-jewel, gold-inlaid fingerprint seal as proof that it is the authentic original painting. This original painting is much larger than the duplicate, as the duplicate was only around eighteen square feet.

1. 《Los Angeles Asian Journal  May 31, 2000. What Type of Expert Is He? The Selling Price of His Painting “Majesty” Has Shocked the World》

Some people say that Master Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) is an expert in Buddhism. Some say that he is a great painter or a great singer. There are those who say that he is a great medical expert or a great ethicist. There are also those who say that he is a scientist. On May 28th, Unique Art Collections International Co., Ltd. auctioned Master Wan Ko Yee’s (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) painting entitled “Majesty.” An art collector purchased this painting by way of competitive bid for a price of NT$64,950,000 (this equals U.S.$2,125,327.) People all over the world were shocked to hear of this purchase price.

Some people think that the paintings of Master Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III)  are Buddhist paintings and for this reason command such an extraordinarily high price. This viewpoint, which has been expressed to the media by certain people who do not understand art, is totally erroneous. In fact, Mr. Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) is a great artist whose paintings cannot be matched by anyone in this day and age. Eleven of his paintings were exhibited by China in an international art exhibition which took place in Philadelphia in 1978. The mainland Chinese government even built a huge art museum, the first of its kind in the history of China, in order to display more than two hundred of his paintings.

Master Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) is not only a famous and great artist, he is also a leader in the world of art. When he was twenty years old, he was the head of the Chinese Painting Research Division of the China Education, Science and Culture Organization. This is a high level organization within art circles in China and its leaders include people such as Chou Ying-Nan, Wu Zhang-Shu, Qian Jun-Tao, Xie Zhi-Liao, Liang Shu-Ming, Wan Lai-Ming and Cang Ke-Jia.

In the entire history of Chinese painting, no other painter was able to master the amount of artistic skills, the variety of different styles and the diversity of subject matter which Master Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) has mastered. Other painters could only exhibit two or three different artistic skills at the most. For example, Zhang, Da-Qian exhibited three different artistic skills: line painting, traditional painting and splash ink painting. However, Master Wan Ko Yee has completely mastered a few dozen different artistic skills. Master Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) can paint landscapes, people and other objects, animals, flowers, birds, fish and insects by using the meticulous brushwork style or by using the freehand brushword style. Whichever style he uses, his paintings are always elegant, grand, and full of life. One can get a glimpse of his artistic skills by looking through the huge book which contains a collection of his paintings.

In 1995, the Sichuan Daily News and the Chengdu Evening News each printed an advertisement on behalf of an auction house. This auction house wanted to buy the Master’s paintings for a price of R.M.B. 1,700 yuan per square inch. Master Wan Ko Yee’s (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) skills have reached the highest level in the world when it comes to ink and wash paintings. Thus, in 1991, the World Poets and Culture Congress conferred upon him the title of “The world’s only Distinguished International Master.” This is the highest position possible and is on the same level of honor as a head of state.

Of course, the Master is also an ethicist. His books included Selected Philosophical Saying of Master Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III). He is a singer. There are fourteen tapes and CD’s containing his songs. The famous singer Zhang Huw-You is his student. He is a scientist. He developed two green teas called “Ba Wang Chun” and “Bi Yu Chun.” These are the best quality teas in the world. He is a medical expert who has cured countless people of a variety of different diseases. There were times when in one day, more than three hundred people had appointments to see the Master for treatment. The Master invented many new treatments for diseases, such as an extremely effective different experts? Why is it that this one person Master Wan Ko Yee (H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III) , has combined skills of several different experts? The main reason is that he is a Great Dharma King Master of Buddhism. He has truly mastered the Five Knowledges spoken if in Buddhism. All of his skills mentioned above cover only part of the Five Knowledges which he has mastered. Instead of trying to describe what type of the expert he is, it would be better simply to say that he surpasses the word “expert.” He is a precious treasure who is a benefit to humanity. He is a Dharma King Master who is a rare gem in this world.
